The Nigeria Democratic Congress has zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to Southern Nigeria.
The decision was reached during the party’s national convention held in Abuja on Saturday.
Announcing the development, the party stated that the 2027 presidential ticket would be reserved for candidates from the South and would be for a single four-year term, while the 2031 presidential ticket would be zoned to Northern Nigeria.
The convention comes amid growing political momentum within the NDC following recent defections by several high-profile politicians and lawmakers from other parties.
Among leading figures currently associated with the party are former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Musa Kwankwaso.
The convention is also expected to ratify recent decisions of the party’s National Executive Committee, including amendments to the party constitution and the election of national officers.
In recent weeks, the party has recorded an influx of defectors from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
On Tuesday, at least 17 members of the House of Representatives announced their defection from the ADC to the NDC during plenary.
The defections followed the formal entry of Obi and Kwankwaso into the party after leaving the ADC, citing internal crises, persistent litigation, and political instability within the opposition platform.
Both leaders were welcomed into the NDC by former Bayelsa State governor and party leader, Seriake Dickson.
The latest developments further highlight the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
